What's the last thing you remember before coming here?

It's okay to be vague -- something like "I saw a good friend" or "I was in a garden". I'll probably ask, but you're welcome to be shy about it, if that's what you'd prefer. Or tell me your life story. I don't have much to do, tonight.

Sorry to hear that. I bet you thought this place was some kind of afterlife then, huh? Or maybe you still think so.

Nothing to be sorry about. I'm kind of over it.

I didn't really take this as any kind of afterlife, no--people like me are kind of complicated when it comes to what happens after death. Even if I had, it's been more than long enough for me to get the hint that this is pretty real.

I'd like to hear what "people like you" believe happens after death then, if you feel like sharing.

How long have you been here?

It's a long and tiring explanation involving magic. Summary is 'we don't really get an afterlife'.

Three years this January. I'm pretty sure that's about right.

What do you do instead? Do you enter a cycle of some sort?

Hmn. That was the longest amount of time given for someone having been here when I first arrived. You must have arrived shortly after all this started -- assuming that limit is the first instance of this sort of thing. With how frequently people leave, I suppose that would be hard to determine even for those who've been here over three years.

That's roughly the idea of it, I guess.

Tell you the truth, I ain't sure when all this started. Even with how many people leave, I wouldn't say there's an end in sight either. Unless this place decides to quit pulling people in and just let the bunch of us trickle out gradually, which is a pretty goddamned depressing idea if you ask me.

Is it a cycle of new lives, or the same life over and over?

Right. This world brings in more people than those who leave, generally. It might not be a constant rate, but it's enough to keep the population high. I don't think we have to worry about it stopping suddenly -- it didn't when unusual events were happening, after all.

I take it you really love it here, then.

Crossing into 'it's complicated' territory here. It's not reincarnation, if that's what you're asking.

..I guess I don't mind it. All this time of seeing people come and go has gotten tiring, but it's a little better than the alternative.

That seems to be the case for a lot of people. I hear most of us from other realities were kind of screwed over where we came from.

People like me, we're called into the world for a very specific purpose. Once we die or that purpose is over and done with, we go back where we came from until we're called again. Really, it's kind of a pain in the neck to explain.

Yeah? I don't usually ask about what kinda mess other people show up from. Knowing my luck I'd run into somebody that was all sensitive about the subject or whatever.

Sounds more like it's a pain in the neck to experience in the first place.

If you're worried about being sensitive, you should probably think about announcing your death less cavalierly.
